Introduction to Internet

What is Internet?

It is a worldwide network of computer networks. When several computers are connected with each other a network is formed. The Internet connects billions of computers from all over the world, forming a network by which people from different location can communicate with each other.

The Internet is transformation and evolution of the information age. What had made Internet popular are its flexibility, ease and speed.

Connecting to Internet:-

Basically connecting computer to the Internet involves the process of connecting your computer with another computer that provides the Internet services.

To connect to the Internet you must require the following:-

• System – It may be Desktop, Mobile etc. but system must have sufficient storage/memory to run the browser.
• Browser – A browser is software which is necessary in order to view any Web pages.
• Internet Connection – You must have Internet connection.
• Internet Service Provider – The companies which provide access to Internet are known as Internet Service Provider.

Types of Internet Connection:-

You can connect to Internet in three different ways they are:-

• Dedicated Internet Connection
• Dial-up Internet Connection
• Broadband Internet connection

What is Web?

The Web is similar to library it consist billions of pages of text, pictures, videos, animation, music etc. These pages are called Web pages which are stored on different computers connected to Internet.

Basically a collection of all these Web pages are known as Web.

Many people get confused between Internet and World Wide Web. They think that both are same but actually it’s not the Internet is a huge network and World Wide Web or the Web is a part of internet.

• E-mail – It is the most commonly used Internet service in which you can send and receive messages from all over the world.
• Newsgroups – You can discuss on wide range topics such as recreational activities, Scientific research etc.
• Chat Rooms – You can chat with people from all over the world.
• Instant Messaging – You can instantly message to anyone in just few seconds.
• Search Engines – These are utilities which are used to search information.
• LISTSERV – It is a system that is used to create, manage and control emails.

What is Web Address or URLs:-

It is a unique address of Web site commonly referred to URL (Uniform Resource Locator) which helps to identify the Web site. In the simple way you can say it is the home address of any Web site/pages.
